<p>Today, in this contest, Craig Ballantyne is going to run on the treadmill on an incline of .5 and a speed of 10.5 mph for 3 minutes, while Brad Pilon eats pizza and drinks soda pop.</p>
<p>Brad is going to try to consume as many calories as he can in those 3 minutes, while Craig is going to see how many calories he can burn off in that same amount of time.</p>
<p>In 3 minutes, Brad consumed approximately 1000 total calories, while Craig burned only 43 calories.  </p>

<p>What are the best ways to build muscle and keep it on?</p>
<p>1. Work complementary muscles with consecutive supersets.</p>
<p>To get the best results from your workout, make them short and difficult. Building muscle is not about marathon-length exercise sessions but about challenging your muscles.</p>
<p>The best way to challenge your muscles is supersetting. This is when you pair two exercises with no rest period in between.</p>
<p>Supersetting works by exercising two muscle groups in consecutive movements with very short periods of rest between sets. Your muscles are challenged more, and you reduce your risk of injury because there is much less strain on your joints and tendons.</p>
<p>Supersets allow you to see results more quickly, in addition to making your workouts more effective, efficient, and safe. You can superset exercises for back and chest muscles, quad and hamstrings, and more. An example is doing tricep kickbacks with bicep curls with no rest in between the two moves.</p>
<p>2. Raise the difficulty level with compound exercises.</p>
<p>When you are trying to build muscle, intensity is the key. While your workouts are short ? not more than 35-40 minutes ? they should be very intense and difficult for your body.</p>
<p>To build muscle even faster, use compound exercises. To complete the move, you need to use more than one muscle. Some examples include:</p>
<p>* Pairing a walking lunge with an overhead press</p>
<p>* Completing a pushup with side planks</p>
<p>* Pairing squats with overhead presses</p>
<p>* Lunges with bicep curls</p>
<p>* Pushups with one armed row</p>
<p>These moves allow you to add intensity, work on balance and coordination, and work different muscle groups at the same time. This reduces your risk of injury, makes your workouts more effective, improves your functional fitness, and builds muscle.</p>
<p>3. Muscles need rest to develop.</p>
<p>While it may seem counterintuitive, muscles actually require rest for growth, development, and retention. This is why rest is so important in your routine.</p>
<p>If you continually strain your muscles with daily workouts or by working the same muscles for more than one day in a row, you are not allowing your muscles to build. In fact, you are sabotaging your own muscle building efforts.</p>
<p>The following workout routine is an example that is effective for building muscle:</p>
<p>* Work out three days a week</p>
<p>* Assign each part of the body one day (shoulders, triceps, and shoulders on day one, back and biceps on day two, and legs on day three).</p>
<p>* Build in rest periods.</p>
<p>* Repeat!</p>
<p>A schedule like this will help your body build muscle and also prevent injury, which can further delay your results.</p>
